>> new developments tonight in a hit-and-run crash involving san francisco police officer christopher kohrs. we're now getting a look at surveillance video taken near the scene of the accident sunday morning. >> more live now with the littest. melanie. >> we're here at san francisco general hospital where both victims involved in this accident are currently inside. just a couple of moments ago i spoke with one of the victim's close friend. that victim's name is victor perez and a close family friend tells me he's covered in bruises. he has a broken leg and also he's just found out his jaw is broken in three places. this accident is not only life-changing for this victim and one other but likely for officer kohrs as well. once he returns from medical leave, if he's clear to return for medical leave, he'll be placed on suspension and if found guilt on the felony charges, he could lose his job. >> we hold ourselves to a higher

standard as police officers, and you don't like to see anything like that happen. >> reporter: news that one of sfpd's own officers is facing two count of felony hit and run spread through the department early sunday morning. it was around 2:20 a.m. that the driver of this dodge charger hit two men in their 40s. police quickly identified who was behind the wheel. >> christopher kohrs. >> reporter: parking attendant ball shared the surveillance video near broadway from montgomery and shows people react and running towards the scene. >> someone else is running opposite. we don't know if he's trying to get help or running from something. >> reporter: asfpd spokesperson says officer kohrs turned himself in as many as eight hours after the accident. >> much later, say around 10:00 in the morning at police headquarters building on third street. >> reporter: timing which would affect any sobriety test given. >> that's something that's being taken into account by the

investigators. >> reporter: officer kohrs gained national attention as the hot cop in an interview with halfkorean.com. he spoke about his sudden fame saying i drove very carefully and never peeled out and never got overly drunk and said inappropriate things like before this thing came out because everyone was watching. sfpd says officer kohrs was on medical leave before the accident. he'll be placed on suspension if he's cleared to return. and the family friend that i spoke with said that the other victim in all of this would like to lay low for now. he says that these guys were helping out some friends who just performed a musical set load their gear into a vehicle when officer kohrs hit them. we'll have much more from that friend coming up tonight at six. live in san francisco, melanie woodruff, abc news 7 news. >> thank you. an 18-year-old pittsburgh woman died sadly today after her car flipped over. here's the result. it happened on kirker pass road just before noon. investigators say her car went

off the road, flipped and landed on the roof, as you can see. she was not wearing a seat belt at the time and was ejected from the vehicle. first responders rushed to the hospital but could not save her. investigators don't know why she lost control of the car. we've learned today the person kill in a dramatic crash on highway 101 in san rafael yesterday was a 66-year-old woman from ukia. police say pamela burns' husband was driving the corolla that cross the five lanes of traffic before hitting a truck and flipping over. he survived, but investigators say he's too seriously injured right now to find out what caused him to lose control. police are still on the lookout for this man who is considered armed and dangerous. 22-year-old anthony kirincic is accused of killing his girlfriend on saturday. 34-year-old colleen straw died at a local hospital after being stabbed inside a home in san mateo. police say domestic violence had been reported at the woman's house in the past. authorities found kirincic's car in the parking garage near san

carlos and evacuated a nearby hospital, but there was just no sign of him. happening now. crews are on the scene of a two-alarm house fire in mountainview. this is video of the scene from sky 7 hd. we're told two buildings are involved, but crews say they do have the fire under control right now. no one was injured. >> well, what might have looked like a routine car break-in in san francisco recently has turned out to be anything but that. >> turns out that the thief got away with a very valuable violin. the south bay college student who it belongs to says that the 200-year-old instrument is like part of the family. >> it's priceless. >> reporter: erica is a master atropino and her first love of music is the violin. ♪ >> reporter: not just any violin but this rare instrument which she played at a recital several years ago. it's so precious erica even gave it a name. >> i named it elizabeth. it has a name. it's like something that i

really made my own. >> reporter: elizabeth the violin was made in london by george krask in the early 1800s and is valued at about $20,000. erica had loaned it to a family friend who needed it for music school auditions, but on november 20th it was stolen from this safeway parking lot on webster street in san francisco. erica is devastated. >> it's something that i really didn't appreciate having taken from me. >> reporter: part of the family? >> definitely is. >> reporter: the violin is hard to miss. inside this bright red shiny case. >> i've been kind of stressing like this just big sentimental issue like i really wanted to pass on this violin to my children that my dad passed on to me. >> reporter: sadly, the violin not insured. >> it is something really important for us. we would love to -- we really would like to get it back >> reporter: san francisco police are working the case but need tips from the public. erica is studying music at dartmouth college back east. she hopes to be reunited with elizabeth by the time she

returns to school after the holiday break. >> we're also offering a reward of $1,000 with no questions asked if someone would return it to us. >> reporter: in sunnyvale, cornell barnard, nbc 7 news. police have made an arrest after a prowler was caught on surveillance video at several homes in san francisco. the video shows a person wearing what appears to be a wig casing homes. residents in the castro district and newy valley reported cases. unclear if anything was stolen and police have not announced what charges this person might face. back to work after a holiday break and let's turn to the weather now. light showers fell around the bay area. >> this video was shot near mountainview and spencer christian is here with an accuweather update and a look at what's ahead. >> light showers today have tapered off to scatter sprinkles right now, but lots of clouds remain. live doppler 7 hd. mostly cloudy skies right now and some little areas of moisture showing up on the radar image. over in the sierra a bit more

nbc 7's news reporter laura anthony is live in alameda with the story. laura? >> reporter: well, hi, dan. this is the gotcha. it's a lot better off right now than it was earlier today. it's in drydock up on dry land, as you can see. earlier it was stranded out in the bay, up on that sea wall which was submerged by the unusually high tide. there is quite a bit of damage underneath here, i can tell you that, but the owner tells us this boat will be back out at sea in good time. it looked like a toy, precariously perched on a break wall near the mouth of the oakland estuary. it was a 51-foot cabin cruiser, a half million dollar yacht named "got cha." >> it was high tide so the sea wall was not visible. >> reporter: owner raffi lopez told us it happened about noon sunday during an otherwise pleasurable cruise with his family on the bay. >> well, of course, your first thought is the boat going to

sink? but it didn't, but i called the coast guard. they came immediately. >> reporter: with the "gotcha" stuck, lopez and his family had to be rescued by the coast guard. this morning at low tide he returned with vessel assist to retrieve the "gotcha," but it was no simple task. >> it was very stuck so we hired a crane and hired vortex construction and brought a barge with a big crane and lift it had off because we couldn't move it with our boats. >> reporter: once off the wall, the boat made it to swenson's boat works under its own power. >> i'm going to get it fixed up and get it back out in the water as soon as possible. >> reporter: that may take a while. the damage to the hull expected to be in the $40,000 to $70,000 and should put the "gotcha" in drydock for at least a couple of months. in alameda, laura anthony, abc 7 news. while bigger means better at port of oakland. officials announced today they will rhett fit four existing cranes to make them taller in order to handle the new larger and more modern mega cargo ships

out there. the plan calls for crews to cut away legs of existing cranes and the replace them them with new ones that are 26 feet taller. they will be installed next spring at a cost of $16 million. >> it is cyber monday when retailers roll out all the big deals, expected to be the biggest online shopping day ever. the national retail federation estimates 121 million shoppers will hunt for internet bargains today. analyst estimate stores will get more than $3 billion in sales, this despite all the early deals rolled out before thanksgiving. >> almost every door buster has been available online as well, and that really benefits shoppers. cyber monday is a great day tore toy shopping. we see even higher rate of best of the year prices than we do on thanksgiving or black friday. >> black friday's in-store sales were down 1.2 billion from last year because shoppers are choosing to avoid the crazy crowds and buy online. this year marks a decade since

the first cyber monday. but it wasn't all good news for online sales. target had so much business they had to meter traffic online to make sure all its customers were able to use the website. paypal also reported problems with people logging in or making transactions this morning. most say their websites have been restored. cyber monday means long hours for workers at amazon. abc 7 news was at the shipping facility in tracy today. the company expects to process more than 43 million products this year, surpassing its previous record set just last year. courtney expects to put in a 12-hour day but says it gives her an advantage when it is her turn to do shopping. >> a lot of items and giving me a lot of good ideas for my son to get him for christmas. almost too much. >> this is the first holiday season for amazon to use robots at all 13 of its u.s. facilities. the robots move five feet per second and can carry 750 pounds.

executives say that spooed speeds up the process of getting orders into the hands of employees and out to waiting customers. cyber monday is also primetime for cyber criminals. if you're leading online to shop experts say use only secure websites. be aware of fake e-mail campaigns that bring to you a compromised website that asks you for personal information. don't make purchases on public wi-fi hot spots. now is the great time to get deals on gas but not here in california. the national average for a gallon of regular unleaded gas is $2.04, down more than 25% from just a year ago. michigan hats lowest statewide average with a gallon going at $1.81, under 2 bucks but six states including california don't have a single station selling gas below $2 a gallon. the average price here statewide is $2.67, which is not bad relatively speaking compared to where it was just a couple of years ago. >> right. probably using your windshield

wipers just a little bit today. >> yeah, absolutely and your coat and scarf. spencer christian is outside with the forecast. >> i'm using my coat right now, that's for sure and did use the wipers earlier today. the showers we had have tapered off to scattered sprinkles. clouds are lingering over the bay area, as you can see and areas of moisture in the atmosphere. not much hitting the ground right now. here in the bay area, looking down over the bay and over the coastline. these are the forecast features. not quite so cold overnight as it was last night, but still pretty chilly in our inland valleys. partly cloudy tomorrow and the next day, and we expect wet and windy weather on thursday. here's our satellite radar composite image. you can see the main body of the system that brought us today's shower and has pretty much fizzled. scattered sprinkles right now but there's a stronger storm coming later this week and that one will bring us a heavier dose of rainfall and perhaps some gusty winds as well. thursday morning beginning our

forecast an paying at 7:00 a.m. at that point clouds around and by 10:00 a.m. or so rain will push into areas like cloverdale, the northern most part of our viewing area, and by 1 p.m. notice how quickly that storm will have swept through the bay area. still raining though especially down in the east bay and south bay and lingering in the north bay. then by 4:00 p.m. we'll see the storm beginning to break up into areas of rain but still we'll have some wet weather into the afternoon and evening commute on thursday. so by 10:00 thursday night, here's what we can expect from that storm as it moves through. it will move in and out quickly. locally gusty winds will be -- will be associated with this storm, and most of the rain or should i say the greater rainfall totals will occur in the north bay so we project by 10:00 thursday night rainfall totals of .1 inch to a quarter inch and santa rosa will have .6 so it will be a wetter storm for the north bay. overnight chilly in the inland valleys, upper 30s and low 40s

here are your headlines at 4:30. newly released surveillance video shows someone leaving the scene after an early hit and run yesterday morning. officer chris kohrs has been arrested. he was on medical leave at the time and is now out on bail. the two victims had serious injuries. one was upgraded to fair condition today. kohrs made national headlines after being nicknamed the hot cop of castro. there was word of a suspected prowler showing a person in a wig who appears to becation homes. you see it right there. residents in the castro district have reported a similar person. police aren't saying yet what the charges will be. microsoft founder bill gates pledged today to take on climate

news/"washington post" poll and 36% say it is not a problem, and just 43% believe most scientists agree that global warming is happening. some stanford students are at u.n. climate summit and one them spoke with abc 7 news today from paris. a lead student organizer with fossil fuels stanford and the group held a sit-in earlier this morning calling for stanford to divest from the fossil fuel industry and he's hopeful the nations will come together during the climate talks to build a better future. >> history will be made in the next few weeks, and i'm hopeful that the history is something looked back on with pride with all the nations in the world. i hope it will be a binding international climate agreement. >> he would like to see an agreement to limit greenhouse gas emissions including financial incentives and a penalty. talk about timing. beijing is experiencing its worst smog of the year right now. china's state-run news agency says authorities issued an original alert, the highest of the year and second only to red

which is the very worst. this is video of beijing during a previous alert. residents in northern china were told to stay indoors. pope francis ventured into a volatile muslim neighborhood today in the central african republic. >> schoolchildren chanted god is great as pope entered the neighbor of the capital city. pope francis insisted on visiting the area to appeal for peace in a country where two years of christian-muslim violence have divided the capital and forced nearly a million people to leave their homes. the stop is the pope's last in hits three-nation african tour. well, a rare about-face for donald trump. after his campaign announced a major endorsement from a group of black ministers, the gop front-runner had to cancel the news conference. this as other candidates keep challenging some of trump's controversial statements of late. more now from washington with more. >> history is being made at trump towers. the black community is engaging

and it hasn't happened since. >> reporter: other candidates are staying out of the fray focusing instead on cyber monday shoppers. marco rubio's campaign offering a flash sale on this baseball tee and ted cruz supporters unveiling a limited edition sweater. and it's not just republicans. democrats also trying to get in on some of the cyber monday dollars offering their liberal supporters a one day only sale online. >> jury selection is under way in the trial of six baltimore police officers charged in the freddie gray case. overs william porter arrived at courthouse today charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless endangerment and assault. freddiy gray died after suffering a spinal cord injury in the back of a police van back in april. his death sparked protests nationwide. two men are facing charges after staging an eight-hour

richard tillman, the youngest power of american hero pat tillman is making a name for himself as a children's author. he's now a stay-at-home dad with his sons who inspired him to write a book series to help teach children important life lessons. >> my wife came home and i was about to pull my head off. i'm like this kid is like a [ bleep ] lunatic and she looked at me, what a great term. >> tillman found an illustrator and turned that idea into an e-book series and believes his late brother pat would say being a children's ought saar natural

a breakthrough is paving the way for new alzheimer's cure. >> and an ancient chinese exercise could help us sleep better. here's jane king with today's wellness report. >> reporter: new treatments for alzheimer's disease could be on the horizon after a team of researchers discovered how the degenerative brain condition destroys the connections between brain cells. researchers have identified a new molecular mechanism that contributes to synapse loss, one of the first signs of alzheimer's and the hope is that discovery could lead to a treatment. you may have had lots of cranberries over the last few days, but do they offer any health benefits in the "new york times" says while cranberries are recommended for urnry tract infections the results on how well they actually work is mixed. some studies say they do reduce

ucsf made a major announcement. the research hospital has been given a $20 million grant to find a cure for aids. they have five years to do it. abc 7 news reporter li i leanne melendez joins us with more. >> reporter: the aids research foundation has raised a total of $200 million to fight aids so forth first time we're use the words eradication, cure, with a lot more confidence. no other group of scientists and researchers in the world has studied and worked with aids patients like those gathered in this room today, from mervin silverman, san francisco's director of health when the cases were first reported to

way for a man who has a history of domestic violence. more live from san mateo on the story. >> reporter: well, dan, that garage in the medical center is where police found the suspect's car on saturday. now, they say they do have some leads, but so far no arrests. we've learned that police were called to the house on at least two occasions involving the suspect, anthony kirincic, once in july and once late in september and that was the one that drew the restraining order. 34-year-old colleen straw stabbed to death noon saturday here at her home on south "b" street in san mateo. the man police are looking for her former boyfriend, 22-year-old anthony kirincic. it was a stormy violent relationship, and in late september police were called to the house. >> he, unfortunately, beat her, and she ended up having to go to the hospital.

>> reporter: kirincic was arrested, charged and convicted of felony assault and domestic violence. in october straw got a restraining order against him. it was a second one she had filed this year. this summer a judge issued an order against a former roommate who harassed her, but this one proved deadly. kirincic was just released from jail after serving 60 days of a 120-day sentence. >> what happened is he completed his jail sentence last week, and so the violation of the restraining order was when he allegedly committed this murder sneer there's an all-out manhunt for kirincic. >> we thought we had a couple good leads, chased a few down in the east bay but no luck. >> police swept bars in the administration station when a cell phone pinged nearby. meanwhile the victim's parents told us she always said best in everyone she member
